Federation Internationale de Football Association confirm the first VAR World Cup

Federation Internationale de Football Association confirm the first VAR World Cup

But there was an intriguing subplot to the announcement, with teams permitted to use a fourth substitute in matches that go into extra time.

The technology was approved by football's lawmakers this month and despite some opposition it will have its official unveiling at the World Cup.

The VAR system has been trailed worldwide, but its use in England during FA Cup games has been met with great cynicism.

"It's an essential decision, very important and historical decision".

The system allows the referee or the video assistant to review decisions where a "clear and obvious" error is spotted.

"It's a decision based on the trials that were carried out in over 1,000 matches in the last two years that provide us with guarantees and concrete facts that VAR definitely helps referees", Infantino said.

"We're happy about the FIFA decision", Zbigniew Boniek, head of the Polish Football Association (PZPN), told the Łączy Nas Piłka website.

Infantino also said he did not have any concerns surrounding political issues involving Russian Federation. "If we lose a minute to correct mistakes, I think we have done something good", said Infantino earlier this week on a visit to Lima.

"We are not anxious at all, we are here to organise a football tournament", Infantino said.

On June 13, the FIFA Congress will convene to vote on the host of football's showpiece event, with Morocco and a joint North American venture between the United States, Canada and Mexico the only bids in play.

FIFA's Council signed off on 2017 accounts which showed another loss, albeit less than half of the $369 million deficit in 2016, after another year of stalled sponsor sales.

The world ruling body said "rigorous cost control measures" had helped keep expenses below budget.

"The World Cup is a national priority for our government and that is why it has guaranteed the required investment in our exciting and innovative stadium plans", added Elalamy.
