Google Will Now Also Earn From Your Shopping Searches

Google is partnering with major brands including Target, Walmart, Home Depot, Costco, and Ulta Beauty to start.

GOOGLE HAS announced partnerships to enable a "where can I buy...." query in searches, with a particular focus on Google Assistant (of course).

Google is confident that the new move will entice its users to purchase more from its partners, which will give it an edge against rival Amazon. According to its data, mobile searches for "where to buy" grew over 85% over the past two years.

- Shoppers will be able to find products from participating retailers through new platforms such as Google Assistant, which offers "voice shopping" (similar to Amazon's Alexa).

Google's new program is called Google Shopping Actions.

It could create real competition for Amazon, if Google gets it right.

The previously unreported initiative sprang from Google's observation that tens of millions of consumers were sending image searches of products, asking "Where can I buy this?"

The new approach is different from what retailers usually have to pay when accessing Google ads. You can also speak out loud to your Google Home to add items, like tin foil, to your shopping cart. For example, a shopper looking for sneakers on Google on his phone can see a retailer's listing and add that to his Google Express cart.

So far, Google Shopping Actions only appear to be surfaced in the U.S., but doubtless they will roll out worldwide in the future.

ENEMY OF MY ENEMY IS MY FRIEND The retailers are also eager to get in on the rapidly growing voice shopping market dominated by Amazon's popular Echo home device, analysts and consultants said.

Help your customers shop effortlessly with you, across Google.

The reasoning behind this change in how products are listed in search results stems from changes in how people are actually using search engines. The new program nearly coincides with a "broad" core algorithm update that impacts the Google search.

The company revealed that the sites that lost rankings recently did not do anything bad, rather they lost because the search giant altered the way each site would rank for certain phrases, notes SEJ. "There's nothing wrong with pages that may now perform less well", the tech firm said.

A Google search for "rubber duck" serves an Amazon link as the third result. Recently, the company updated its Lens tool to recognize landmarks, products from photos, and contact info from business cards.
