Iran builds new military base near Damascus

Satellite images from the Israeli firm ImageSat International (ISI) obtained by Fox News show what is believed to be the new Iranian base in Syria operated by the Quds Force, the special operations arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The photos show two hangars, each roughly 30 yards by 20 yards, used to store short- and medium-range missiles, Fox News reported.

While Israel has carried out periodic strikes against the most significant facilities, it has been unable to stop the proliferation of Iranian bases.

Iran's president will meet with his Turkish and Russian counterparts in Istanbul in May, a spokesman for the Islamic Republic's Foreign Ministry said on Monday, 26 February, according to IRNA.

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman on Wednesday morning told Israel Radio that "there is nothing new under the sun, and there is no need to treat any information in the media as absolute". "Its actions did not match the needed order of priorities to address the missile threat it faced", the report said, according to Haaretz.

Manish Rai explains that the tensions between Israel and Iran have rapidly increased in the past month-to the point that Israel's concern about the Iranian threat, now present not only in Lebanon but also in Syria, is at an all-time high.

On Tuesday, the head of US Central Command, Joseph Votel, warned that Iran has been increasing the quality and quantity of missiles it is supplying to groups in Syria and Lebanon. Moreover, Israel can negotiate with the USA and Russian Federation to expand the buffer zone in southwest Syria where Iranian-backed forces aren't allowed to operate.

Israel has set red lines throughout the Syrian civil war, focused on preventing "game-changing" weapons from landing in Hezbollah's hands, as well as stopping a permanent Iranian military presence from emerging in Syria.

IAF chief Maj. Gen Amikam Norkin said the "thorough investigation that we have carried out shows a learning process at all levels both at headquarters and in the field and will make the air force even better".
