Kenyan government tries to deport opposition politician again - lawyer

Kenyan government tries to deport opposition politician again - lawyer

High court Judge Roselyn Aburili has also ordered that Miguna miguna be presented in the court on Wednesday, March 28th.

"Explain the circumstances that led to the clobbering of Stephen Letoo, a Citizen Television journalist and Robert Gichira, an NTV Cameraman, at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport; state the action that will be taken on the police officers who clobbered the journalists and confirm if the government shall compensate the two for the injuries sustained", the nominated Senator said.

The outspoken lawyer also wants to be granted unrestricted right to re-enter and remain in the country. Last week, the court ruled that he could return to the country.

"They say they want to remove me by force so they will have to kill me first because I am a Kenyan citizen", Miguna said, adding that he was not travelling with a Canadian passport but his Kenyan identification card and court orders.

"Immigration official in compliance with Court Order requested Miguna to produce the documents he had used to travel into the country, in order to facilitate his entry".

Miguna spent his night at the departure lounge after refusing to fly to Dubai. A family member told VOA late Monday night that Miguna was being detained incommunicado at the airport and that he had not eaten in 24 hours.

Shortly before his deportation, which came after Odinga enraged the government by staging a symbolic "swearing-in ceremony", Miguna was charged with treason.

Miguna Miguna, a lawyer, was deported by Kenyan authorities in February for his role in a protest by opposition leader Raila Odinga, who maintains he was the victor of an election that returned President Uhuru Kenyatta to power past year.

On February 26, Justice Enoch Chacha Mwita suspended the revocation of Dr Miguna's passport by Immigration boss Gordon Kihalangwa.

Since then, Raila Odinga has shaken hands with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and called for a truce saying that they will work together to unite Kenyans, a move that Miguna has termed as a "betrayal for the people of Kenya".

The rival politicians vowed to unify the country after elections previous year in which about 100 people were killed, majority in clashes between opposition supporters and security forces.

Miguna told VOA on Sunday that he meant to "lead a revolutionary movement" to eventually replace Kenyatta and Odinga.
