Lawsuit alleges YouTube hiring practices discriminated against white and Asian men

Wilberg, who recruited engineers for Google's and YouTube's parent company Alphabet, said he was sacked after complaining to upper management about the discriminatory hiring practices, and alleges that other members of his team were either disregarded, transferred or demoted. Wilberg's lawsuit claims that YouTube recruiters were told to cancel interviews with applicants that weren't female, black or Hispanic and to "purge entirely" any applications that did not fit those criteria.

That recruiter, Arne Wilberg, is suing Google's sister company, claiming that he was explicitly told not to hire white and Asian men.

It is the latest diversity row to hit Google, coming in the same week as a separate lawsuit claiming that a toxic "bro culture" discriminated against women.

Google said the lawsuit is without merit and will vigorously fight it in court.

After Damore was terminated, he and another white engineer filed a discrimination lawsuit against his former employer.

Silicon Valley-based tech companies, chided for hiring mostly white and Asian men in technical and leadership roles, have tried to figure out ways to develop more inclusive, diverse workforces.

Wilberg is not the only white male tech employee who has publicly bashed Google's penchant to diversify. But past year, Wilberg claims YouTube recruiters were told to cancel interviews where the candidate wasn't female, black or Hispanic. The suit also pointed to an internal hiring recap that was sent out on a weekly basis comparing hiring numbers by identity to its internal goals.

In March 2017, a YouTube staffing manager emailed recruiters to ask them to consider only "candidates that are from historically underrepresented groups" for certain positions, Wilberg claimed.

Wilberg's lawsuit targets Google and 25 unnamed Google employees who allegedly enforced discriminatory hiring rules, quoting a number of emails and other documents.

Wilberg has alleged that in 2016 and 2017, he and his fellow recruiters were told on several occasions to approve or dismiss job candidates based exclusively on whether they were women, black or Latino. Many have adopted policies and programs created to encourage more balanced hiring, not only to right past discrimination but for their own economic advantage: According to management consultancy McKinsey, diverse companies deliver better financial results. This system was later deleted by the company, Wilberg claims.
