Melania Trump got green card through program for people with 'extraordinary ability'

This photo of Donald and Melania is from 2001, the same year she got her green card to the USA for "extraordinary ability".

Melania Trump received an exclusive EB-1 visa, reserved for internationally renowned individuals, in 2001.

The EB-1 program is reserved for people such as academics, global business executives, Olympic athletes and award-winning actors who have shown "sustained national and worldwide acclaim, "the Washington Post reports". Since Melania met Donald Trump in 1998, famously being photographed nude on Trump's private jet for a 2000 issue of British GQ, reporters are questioning Trump's involvement in Melania's successful EB-1 visa application.

The first lady, then known as Melania Knauss, was given a green card reserved for people with "extraordinary ability", in 2001.

Knauss' credentials included runway shows in Europe, a Camel cigarette billboard ad in Times Square and - in her biggest job at the time - a spot in the swimsuit edition of Sports Illustrated, which featured her on the beach in a string bikini, hugging a 1.8m inflatable whale.

Questions have been raised about Melania Trump's immigration status for months as President Trump continues to rail against so-called "chain migration", a process where USA citizens and permanent residents can sponsor close non-citizen family members for a green card.

Morrison, also an immigration expert, said Melania Trump's resume in 2001 seems "inconsistent" with the strict requirements of the EB-1 visa.

"'Mrs. Trump was more than amply qualified and solidly eligible, ' Michael Wildes, an attorney for Melania Trump and her family said to the Post".

"There is no reason to adjudicate her petition publicly when her privacy is so important to her", Wildes said. "NOT ACCEPTABLE!" Trump tweeted last November.

Another immigration expert, Sarah Pierce of the Migration Policy Institute, said to meet the "extraordinary ability" category of the EB-1, it is "generally thought that only the top 2 percent in their field would qualify", such as those who won the Nobel Prize, the newspaper reported. Former congressman Bruce Morrison hinted at the prestige of the award. Melania became a USA citizen in 2006.

"What did she submit?"

In 2016, Ms Trump tweeted out about her immigration status following questions over the legality of her status. While these were certainly high-profile accomplishments, Knauss was not well-known in the fashion industry, according to the Post article.
