MicroLED displays being developed by Apple

MicroLED displays being developed by Apple

Apple is developing its own MicroLED device displays and has made small numbers of the screens for testing, Bloomberg reported on Sunday (March 18). MicroLED has the potential to improve on OLED, but it might be a while before we get to see that with our own eyes.

The technology giant is investing heavily in a new kind of display, dubbed MicroLED, and is producing early-stage prototypes at a secretive, 62,000-square-foot manufacturing facility located close to its headquarters in Santa Clara, California.

Apple - and many other - products now use OLED screens on their devices.

The screens are far more hard to produce than OLED displays, to the extent that Apple almost scrapped the project 12 months ago. Apple is still somewhere between three and five years out from bringing microLED to any of its devices. The shares of several Apple suppliers have taken a plunge. Apple reportedly considered shutting down the project (known internally as T159) past year.

Apple's interest in this next-gen MicroLED technology is not new.

Apple, it appears, is slowly working to lower its dependence on suppliers for the relevant parts on their devices.

According to Bloomberg, Apple is making a big investment in the development of next-generation MicroLED screens, which use different light-emitting compounds than current OLED displays.

The report also mentions of another facility that houses technology that handles LED-transfers, a process in which individual pixels are placed into a microLED screen.

For the very first time in the round, the Cupertino tech conglomerate, Apple, is ready to come up with its ambitious undertaking. Those challenges apparently nearly made Apple shut down the project a year ago, but it didn't, and now working displays are being produced.

For LTPS panels, Apple will continue to seek supplies from Japan Display, Sharp and LG Display during the year.

Apple is expected to start producing also its own iPhone chips.

The screen tech, called MicroLED, is similar to OLED in some respects (both don't require backlight and offer better contrast than LCDs) but has better brightness and consumes less energy.
