Patriots announce release of Martellus Bennett, Bernard Reedy

The move by the Patriots ends a freakish five months for Bennett, who only played in a total of two games during his short stint in New England.

Martellus Bennett may return to football for the 2018 season, but it apparently won't be with the New England Patriots.

For the second straight year, the Patriots are bidding farewell to Martellus Bennett. Bennett, who turns 31 on March 10, began the 2017 campaign with Green Bay (where he hauled in 24 passes for 233 yards in seven games) before catching six passes in two outings with the Patriots after being claimed on waivers.

Reedy, 26, was signed by New England to the practice squad on November 22, 2017, after being released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The team will save $6.2 million in cap space by releasing him.

"After conversations with my family, I'm pretty sure these next eight games will be the conclusion of my National Football League career", Bennett wrote in an Instagram story.

In 2016, Bennett caught 55 passes for 701 yards and a career-high seven touchdowns on his way to earning a Super Bowl ring with the Patriots. The craziness for Bennett started back in October when he wrote on social media that he planned to retire following the 2017 season.

The Bennett brothers are on the move.
