'Tomb Raider' Can't Topple 'Black Panther' at Box Office

'Tomb Raider' Can't Topple 'Black Panther' at Box Office

"Black Panther", starring Chadwick Boseman as the superhero king of a utopian African country, has nearly singlehandedly kept the year's box office total slightly above the same period last year.

Amazingly, the low budget movie beat Disney's big-budget A Wrinkle In Time, which landed in fourth with an estimated $16.56 million in its second week on release.

Alicia Vikander's "Tomb Raider" ruled the global box office with $84.5 million at 32,685 screens in 65 markets, led by a solid $41.1 million opening in China.

Though Tomb Raider edged past Black Panther with $9.1 million on Friday, the latter is expected to top the weekend with $27 million from 3,834 theatres, according to Variety.

The Ryan Coogler-directed superhero blockbuster is the seventh film to pass $600 million domestically after Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($619 million), The Avengers ($623 million), Jurassic World ($652 million), Titanic ($658 million), Avatar ($760 million) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($937 million).

Disney-Marvel's "Black Panther", which opened with a leading $66 million in China last weekend, saw its grosses plunge to $12 million in that market.

Made for a modest $7 million, the movie stars J. Michael Finley as the lead singer of a popular Christian band. It also stars Walton Goggins and Dominic West.

Based on the beloved children's book and with a starry cast including Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon among others, the film's domestic cume now stands at $61 million.

Like Tomb Raider, Fox's YA adaptation Love, Simon - disappointed in its opening. The film took 5th place with $11.5-M from 2,402 theaters. The film stars Nick Robinson in what would be a classic love story - except that it is said to be the first romantic comedy from a mainstream studio to be told from a gay teen's perspective.

MGM's third weekend of its "Death Wish" reboot rounded out the top 10 with $3.4 million at 2,676 locations to give the Bruce Willis vehicle $30 million in 17 days.

Both Love, Simon and I Can Only Imagine nabbed coveted A+ CinemaScores, while Tomb Raider earned a mediocre B.
