Uefa confirm new Champions League and Europa League rule changes

Uefa confirm new Champions League and Europa League rule changes

Whether a team is playing in the Champions League or Europa League knockouts, they will be allowed to make a fourth substitution if the game goes into extra time.

As is the case in the Carabao Cup, the fourth substitute is additional and will have no bearing on the existing three substitutions already permitted, even if they are also made during extra time.

With the exception of the UEFA Champions League final, UEFA Europa League final and UEFA Super Cup, 23 players (instead of 18 players) may be included on the match sheet.

The number of substitutes allowed in both finals will be increased from seven to 12, meaning managers will have more options while having less of a headaches in choosing what players to leave out of final squads.

There is also a pretty big rule change regarding player registration - one the could have a big bearing on signings made during the January transfer window.

Under current regulations a player who appears in the group stages of the Champions League can not represent his new club if he moves in January.

The changes have also brought alterations to the kick-off times for the group stages and knockout rounds.

Champions League group stage matches are to be staggered, so that two fixtures on each day of games kick off at 5:55pm British time.

UEFA Champions League play-offs, group-stage games, round of 16 matches, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final will kick off at 21:00CET.

Had this rule been in place at the start of the season, the likes of Philippe Coutinho would have been allowed to play for Barcelona in the Champions League, while new Arsenal signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could have turned out in the Europa League.

In the group stage there will be two matches played on the Tuesday, and two on the Wednesday, kicking off at 17:55 BST/GMT. Sevilla are the only side eligible for next season.
