WH says Trump would sign huge spending bill

When the official White House readout of the call emerged several hours later, it said Trump congratulated Putin but made no mention of a discussion of a meeting.

According to The Washington Post, Trump's national security advisers specifically told him not to congratulate Putin in his briefing materials.

President Donald Trump, upset over leaks to the media, reportedly made his senior staff sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) meant to last beyond his presidency.

Senator John McCain had strong words on the president's phone call to Putin, saying in a statement, "the American president does not lead the free world by congratulating dictators on sham elections".

"We will work to cultivate the relationship with Russian Federation and we will impose costs when Russian Federation threatens our interests, but we will also look for places to work together when it serves our interests", Gidley said.

At a White House press briefing, one reporter asked about Rep. Trey Gowdy's (R-SC) comment over the weekend, addressed to Trump's lawyer (though the reporter incorrectly said it was addressed to Trump): "If you have an innocent client, Mr. Dowd, act like it".

It's understood that Trump often extends meaningless invitations to foreign leaders, and senior administration officials told the paper that they haven't been instructed to move ahead with plans to see Putin.

Back in April 2016, when the notion of Donald Trump in the White House still seemed fanciful, The Washington Post's Robert Costa and Bob Woodward sat down with Trump.

Trump shunned the advice of some aides in making the call in the first place, after Putin sailed to a fourth term in a vote plagued by evidence of ballot stuffing, media censorship and the jailing of political opponents. "I think it's, you know, fine".

Although Trump said early in his campaign that he and the Russian leader were good friends, he later acknowledged that he had never met Putin. He said that during their hoped-for meeting the two men would likely discuss Ukraine, Syria and North Korea, among other things.

Allies, most notably in Britain, were furious about Trump's apparent lack of solidarity after double agent Sergei Skripal was poisoned in a small English town.

The official added that it is important for the restore the dialogue with Russian Federation, though the current sanctions will remain.
