As US And Its Allies Strike Syria, India Calls For Restraint, Dialogue

UK Prime Minister Theresa May said she had authorized British armed forces "to conduct coordinated and targeted strikes to degrade the Syrian regime's chemical weapons capability".

Human rights activists in Syria and Western leaders accused the Assad regime of dropping barrel bombs full of chemicals on the town of Douma last weekend.

Naval and air forces from the three countries struck three primary targets, including a chemical weapons research facility outside Damascus and a weapons storage facility near Homs, General Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters.

A total of 100 cruise and air-to-surface missiles were launched at targets in Syria, the Russian Defense Ministry stated, noting that two USA warships carried out the attack from the Red Sea, as well as tactical aviation over the Mediterranean Sea and B-1B bombers from al-Tanf area.

Trump tweeted about what he calls "a perfectly executed strike" against Syria. Officials said Syrian air defenses engaged toward the end of the salvo but were ineffective.

State TV broadcast live from the square where a large crowd of civilians mixed with men in uniforms, including an actor, lawmakers and other figures.

When did it take place?

Mission Accomplished! (sic),' he said on Twitter.

Earlier this week, Trump called the chemical attack in Douma "atrocious" and vowed that those responsible would "pay a price".

"U.S., allies will not gain any achievements from crimes in Syria".

USA joint Chief of Staff Marine General Joseph Dunford said the strike was created to degrade Syria's chemical weapons capability without killing civilians or the many foreign fighters in Syria's multi-sided civil war, particularly those from Russian Federation.

"President Putin and his government promised the world that they would guarantee the elimination of Syria's chemical weapons", he added.

Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday France had proof the Syrian government carried out the Douma attack and would decide whether to strike back when all necessary information had been gathered.

The US has about 2000 troops on the ground in Syria as advisers to a makeshift group of anti-Islamic State fighters known as the Syrian Democratic Forces.

RAF Tornado jets set off in the early hours, with The Ministry of Defence deeming the mission a "success", according to reports.

The French Ambassador to the UN Francois Delattre said that the Syrian regime is using awful and destructive weapons against civilians, and that the list of its violations is long.

He said worldwide investigators were ready to visit the site of the suspected attack in Douma. Trump also called out Russian President Vladimir Putin and said that Putin had guaranteed an global agreement for Assad in 2013 to get rid of all his chemical weapons. "Insulting the President of Russian Federation is unacceptable and inadmissible".

"Last year, President Trump made clear that the use of chemical weapons crosses a red line".

Syria's President Bashar Assad announced that his country would respond to the allied attack but offered no details.

At least three US ships, as well as piloted warplanes, participated in the airstrikes.

"All responsibility for them rests with Washington, London and Paris".

Both Syria and its ally Russian Federation have said they would guarantee the safety and security of the OPCW mission - the first outside Damascus since 2014.

Overnight, U.S., British and French forces launched more than 100 missiles from ships and manned aircraft, targeting three of Syria's main chemical weapons facilities.
