Benitez hails Newcastle players for Huddersfield win

Rafael Benitez "gains strength" against rivals for the Real Sociedad job, report Marca on Saturday in news that may be concerning for Newcastle United supporters.

Benitez has regularly talked of trying to turn his side's home ground into a "fortress" - finally it seems as though his efforts are coming to fruition.

"It's not that you finish the season here, so we have to be sure we play well, we get three points and after, still we have to keep fighting".

"To stay calm and to keep fighting and to be in the position that we are at the moment, that's quite positive, but more hard for us than for them".

"Some games, like Manchester United, was great for the confidence of the team".

The Newcastle Captain says that this nearly certainly had an effect on the players and indeed you only have to look at the results to see evidence of that. "They are a good team, well organised".

'If he's available and we think we have to play him, then we play him.

Benitez said: "No, no chance, I don't agree".

Despite dominating for long periods, Newcastle had to wait until the 80th minute before they were able to make a breakthrough.

'If the others score a lot of goals, then you never know, but he is someone who is very competitive and he will have his chances'.

Although Newcastle remained on top following the restart, Laurent Depoitre belatedly mustered an opening for Huddersfield, turning away from Florian Lejeune to drag wide.

Having moved on to the 35-point mark, the Magpies are within touching distance of safety, with basement boys West Brom still to visit St James' next month.

However, even if his side did increase their tally to 35 points - just five short of his target - with seven games still to play, the Spaniard would be taking nothing for granted.

"Ritchie had a little problem but have done the tests and he is fine", Benitez told the press in his pre-match press conference (via Chronicle Live).
