Cathy Yan Will Direct Margot Robbie in HARLEY QUINN Film

Deadline is reporting that Cathy Yan will direct a movie set to star Margot Robbie in a return to her Suicide Squad role of Harley Quinn, presumably with other big-name female DC Comics characters set to appear alongside her.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Yan has now joined the project, which will be based on the Birds of Prey comic book series. Yan, whose feature-film debut Dead Pigs picked up an award at Sundance this year, beat out numerous contenders for the plum job.

Although many details of the film are not yet known, it will reportedly be produced in part by Robbie's LuckyChap Entertainment production company, with Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment also being involved with the upcoming production. Robbie, Will Smith, Jared Leto, and the rest of the cast are all expected to reprise their villain-turned-hero roles for Suicide Squad 2. Quinn, played by Margot Robbie, is the only character now attached, but the source material included appearances by fan favorites Batgirl, Black Canary and the Huntress. Not to mention she'll be the first female Asian-American director ever for a mainstream superhero film. Back in 2016, a report stating that Christian Hodson (Bumblebee: The Movie, Batgirl) had been tapped to write a script for a "Birds of Prey' adaptation surfaced online for the DCEU".

Cathy Yan met with the Warner Bros. and DCEU duo of Walter Hamada and Geoff Johns for her pitch on a Birds of Prey film.

Yan has a number of writing, producing, and directing credits on her resume.

The film is scheduled to begin production at the end of the year. Upon graduating, she worked as a journalist for the Wall Street Journal in New York, Beijing and Hong Kong before following her dreams as a filmmaker.

If the new strategy is to give the movies to directors and writers most capable of telling the character's stories, and then getting out of the way, the DC film universe might have a chance to get better.
