Charley Hull four shots off leader Pernilla Lindberg at ANA Inspiration

Pernilla Lindberg birdied her final hole to grab a one-shot lead after the opening round of the ANA Inspiration, as Charley Hull bounced back from a slow start.

"I'm just happy the rule changed so nobody else can be put through what I was put through previous year", she said. "The whole day it was pretty steady".

"Kind of looking at the other players and looking at the leaderboard maybe a little too much". "It makes me feel so special ..."

Swiss amateur Albane Valenzuela is a shot off the pace after a 67.

At four-under par is a star-studded group that includes Lexi Thompson, 40-year-old Cristie Kerr, a two-time major victor, Sung Hyun Park, last year's Rolex Rookie of the Year and co-Player of the Year; former U.S. Women's Open champion In Gee Chun, Chella Choi and Brittany Altomare.

One par save in particular impressed.

Wie won the HSBC Women's World Championship at the beginning of March, and she has three top-six finishes here, including last year's solo sixth.

After making the turn at 4-over 40, Wie carded two birdies and a bogey on the incoming nine and walked off the Dinah Shore Tournament Course with a disappointing 75.

"I feel like if you know a player is cheating on goal, that's a problem. but she could have hit that putt with her eyes closed", Lincicome said. "Now I wake up pain-free every day".

"I'm just happy the rule changed so nobody else can be put through what I was put through past year", Thompson added. "Overall, I played well today and I just need to keep it up the next three days".

With Scot Kevin McAlpine on her bag, Thompson bounced back from the bitter disappointment to win the Kingsmill Championship a few weeks later and, despite being constantly reminded of the incident, the 23-year-old went on to have a remarkably successful 2017 campaign, which included her being on a winning Solheim Cup team in Des Moines.

Wie said her injuries, strangely, had helped make her a better putter. Since 2014, Wie has struggled with finger, hip, ankle, neck and wrist problems.

Less of a player also would not have rebounded from such an incident a year ago with two tournament wins, six runner-up finishes, a spot on the winning 2017 U.S. Solheim Cup team, 61 of 79 rounds played under par, a career-best No. 3 finish on the LPGA's season money list or the Vare Trophy for the tour's lowest season scoring average, at 69.11. After a poor drive forced her to pitch her ball into play from beside a tree, Thompson somehow curled a mid-range par putt in the right side door. "You know, I still occasionally do". She always felt she had the shots. On Thursday, everything worked, especially the putter as she needed only 26 strokes on the greens. Still nearly a month shy of her 21st birthday, she has 14 LPGA titles - including two majors - to her name... but her most recent victory came back in July 2016. 1, 2, 4, 8 and 9.

"It's nice to see her laughing and having fun, to see her excited to be playing this week", Whelan said.

She is joined in a tie for fourth by Jessica Korda and Jang Ha-na. But she stumbled with bogeys on Nos. That, incidentally, is her only top 20 finish at Rancho Mirage. "I'm just a happy person now". In Gee Chun and Cristie Kerr were at 68 with Thompson, Chella Choi, Sung Hyun Park and Brittany Altomare.
