China Box Office: 'Rampage' Makes Muscular $55M Debut

China Box Office: 'Rampage' Makes Muscular $55M Debut

Rampage earned an estimated $34.5 million for the weekend in North American theaters, and dominated internationally, too, with $114.1 million from 61 territories.

Panther, 5.3 million dollars (2.6 million dollars international). The movie, which is just as two-dimensional as the video game it's based on, wasn't as profitable as predictions expected. In foreign markets its already made an additional $114 million, which means it has already made back its budget and will probably take care of its marketing costs in the coming weeks (it's worth noting that it has a nice cushion week that separates it from The Avengers: Infinity War).

While the success of a horror movie isn't a surprise for the industry, big-budget films like Rampage continue to face a complex marketplace. Decent debuts by Truth of Dare and Isle of Dogs plus remarkably strong holdover business for Peter Rabbit and A Quiet Place helped keep cinemas busy. With the movie produced under a $120 million budget it should prove to be quite profitable for Warner Bros. and New Line, while continuing Dwayne Johnson's long string of bona fide hits. Tyler Posey, Violett Beane, Nolan Gerard Funk and Hayden Szeto, drummed up $19.1 million in the US.

That's more than five times the movie's minuscule $3.5 million budget. While it was as close a race as many expected, Rampage did pull off the box office victory with an estimated $34.5 million, with A Quiet Place dropping just 35.1% in its second frame to earn $32.6 million. The movie also made $2.6 million from two global markets.

The top 20 titles in Oz harvested nearly $17 million, up 12 per cent on the previous weekend according to Numero.

'Ready Player One' dropped to #4 over its third week. The sci-fi action adventure starring Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance has scored a mediocre $114.6 million in the United States but a far more impressive $360.2 million internationally. Overseas, it has scored $360.2 million, giving it a worldwide total of $474.8 million. Universal's R-rated comedy starring John Cena, Leslie Mann, Ike Barinholtz, Geraldine Viswanathan, Kathryn Newton and Gideon Adlon has notched $52.9 million worldwide to date.

The Kay Cannon-directed "Blockers" came in fifth, slipping a steep 50 percent to add another $10.29 million to its $36.92 million domestic tally.

The political thriller 'Beirut' failed to garner much attention. Stubby: "An American Hero" - and added an "A" CinemaScore to a robust 90 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating - also in wide release, but weekend grosses barely cracked $1 million.

Estimates have yet to be reported for the animated "Sgt".
