CWG: Venkat Ragala bags India's fourth weightlifting gold

CWG: Venkat Ragala bags India's fourth weightlifting gold

Back at the venue where last year she won gold in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, the 24-year-old from Manipur broke the existing CWG record with a lift of 84kg in the snatch category and then lifted 108 in the clean & jerk to finish with a combined effort of 192kg.

She registered 86 kg in the snatch and 110 kg in clean and jerk for a total of 196 kg.

Earlier, weightlifters Sanjita Chanu and Mirabai Chanu had won gold for India. India's men's paddlers will meet Singapore in the semifinals, defeating Malaysia 3-1, while the women's team will face England in the last four after defeating Malaysia 3-0.

In artistic gymnastics, women's individual all-around final saw Aruna Budda Reddy and Pranati Das finished a disappointing 14th and 16th respectively, while Yogeshwar Singh finished a disappointing 14th in the all-around final, totalling 75.600 points. Indian hopes dimmed further on Friday as Dipika Pallikal and Vikram Malhotra lost their matches as well.

The finals will be held at 3.07 pm IST today. Gurjit Kaur (6th, 39th minutes), Rani Rampal (56th) and Lalremsiami (59th) scored for India. Sahil Kumar, Ranjit Singh and Sanuraj Sanandaraj failed to qualify for the next round in the men's cycling first round heats. On the contrary, one of the worse decisions was to nominate a physio to join the team as late as on 23 March, and it could have boomeranged big time on the squad, not the least in the case of Sivalingam.

Saturday was an encouraging day for Kenya in the pool at the Commonwealth Games here as Eunice Mbugua put up a good fight but lost her fifth round match to bid goodbye to the lawn bowls competition.

Madeline Groves of Australia won the heat in 25.81 with the semi-final programmed for 8.44pm local time (1.44pm Kenyan time) Saturday.

Women's Hockey: India's hockey campaign was off to a disappointing start at the Commonwealth Games after the country's women's team went down 2-3 to Wales, trailing for most of the Group A clash.

In snatch, Ragala begun with the first attempt of 147 kg before his second attempt of 151 kg was unsuccessful. Ragala chose to go with 187 kg in his second attempt and unlike Opeloge, he was victorious in it.

It is his 2nd consecutive gold medal at Games, as he secured the gold in Glasgow in 2014, as well.

Sanjita took the lead with a successful opening attempt of 104 kg. Her sister Bronte tied for second place, alongside Canada's Taylor Ruck.

While Lather had luck on his side as his nearest rival fouled the all-important final clean and jerk lift, Chanu had her fortitude to thank as she claimed her second successive CWG gold despite nursing a nagging back problem here.

But she failed her third attempt despite a fearless effort as the Indian camp celebrated Sanjita's triumph. India had to face the ignominy of having been suspended by the International Weightlifting Federation for dope-related offences.
