Government sends second notices to CA, Facebook

Government sends second notices to CA, Facebook

The move comes after the responses sent by Cambridge Analytica to the first notice were deemed "unsatisfactory, cryptic and evasive, the stated intention being to hide more than to reveal", the person said.

"What security architecture is proposed to be created by Facebook, on an urgent basis, so that the data concerning Indians is not pilfered or manipulated again for extraneous purposes including to influence the elections", the government has asked Facebook in its new letter.

Zuckerberg denied any "dramatic falloff" in the number of Facebook users when pressed by regulators earlier this month.

Earlier this month, Facebook and Cambridge Analytica had submitted their responses, following which the government has now sought more details.

In its bid to understand the dimensions of Facebook data breach, the Indian government had sought clarifications from Cambridge Analytica (CA), but the response it received was "unsatisfactory, cryptic and evasive", according to sources.

The ministry has asked CA a slew of questions like what kind of data CA had collected in India concerning Indians?

The sources, who did not wish to be identified, said the two companies have now been given time till May 10 to respond.

Government has also asked Facebook what step it would take in case of unauthorised manipulation seeking a reply by May 10.

Academic Aleksandr Kogan's company, Global Science Research, developed a Facebook app that vacuumed up information from users as well as additional data from their Facebook friends.

The government asked Facebook about corrective actions that are being introduced in future to ensure that privacy of Indian data as also maintaining integrity of electoral process.

Soon after the data breach was reported, whistleblower Christopher Wylie said Cambridge Analytica had worked on several projects in India too.

The Centre on Wednesday sent notices to Facebook and Cambridge Analytica for the second time in connection with the scandal involving the misuse of data of people on the social media platform by the British data analytics company.

Facebook has been facing intense scrutiny from its users as well as governments across the globe after a data leak scandal hit about 87 million users.
