Injured Batshuayi 'possibly' fit for World Cup

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed that an untimely injury has ended Michy Batshuayi's season, but he remains in contention for World Cup duty.

The 24-year-old was stretchered off during BVB's 2-0 derby defeat to Schalke on Sunday afternoon, with Yevhen Konoplyanka and Naldo putting the hosts ahead before former Tottenham midfielder Benjamin Stambouli's challenge on the Chelsea loanee during injury time.

A statement from the Bundesliga club read: "Michy Batshuayi suffered an ankle injury in the derby with Schalke and will be probably be out of action for the remainder of the season". He is likely to miss the remainder of the season.

Batshuayi is a key player for Belgium's national team, and Belgian manager Roberto Martínez hopes he will be fit before the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation. "Get well soon, Michy!"

Batshuayi's injury is a blow to Dortmund's Champions League qualification hopes, with Peter Stoger's men fourth in the table, four points clear of RB Leipzig with six matches remaining.

He added: "Hopefully it's not as bad as it looks".

Batshuayi has scored nine times in 14 games since joining Dortmund on loan in the winter transfer window in a deal that runs out at the end of this campaign.

Batshuayi, 24, has scored six goals in 14 caps for Belgium, who are ranked third in the world going into this summer's World Cup in Russian Federation.
