Kendrick Lamar won a Pulitzer Prize for 'DAMN.'

Kendrick Lamar won a Pulitzer Prize for 'DAMN.'

Kendrick Lamar and his 2017 album DAMN. just made history after being awarded a Pulitzer Prize in music. BBC.com quotes the organisers as saying that Kendrick's album offered "affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life".

The importance was not lost on Lamar fans, many of whom took to social media to praise the win.

"The time was right", Dana Canedy, the administrator of the prizes, said in an interview after the winners were announced.

According to Canedy, the decision to award the prize to Lamar unanimous.

Since then, jazz artists Ornette Coleman and Henry Threadgill have been the only other non-classical musicians to receive the honour, and Bob Dylan and Hank Williams were each given an "additional citation". A Pulitzer Prize is awarded every year for a variety of different categories, with the category for music being awarded "For a distinguished musical composition by an American that has had its first performance or recording in the United States during the year".

Lamar was first born and raised at the Los Angeles suburb of Compton, hip hop pioneers' house NWA, and commenced making music. However, Terrence Henderson, better known as Punch, who is the president of Top Dawg Entertainment, tweeted that no one "should speak less than respect in your mouth for Kendrick Lamar". DAMN. was a smashing success past year, winning multiple Grammy awards and propelling Lamar even further into the musical stratosphere.
