Multistate E. coli outbreak traced to lettuce from Arizona

Multistate E. coli outbreak traced to lettuce from Arizona

Health officials have identified romaine lettuce out of Arizona as the culprit in an E. coli outbreak that has sickened 35 people in eleven states, including seven in New Jersey in the last few weeks.

Seventeen people have been infected including six hospitalized in an E. coli outbreak detected in seven states, a new report has revealed.

Three of those patients developed a type of kidney failure associated with an E. coli illness called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can be life-threatening.

Illnesses began between March 22 and March 31, as the CDC said symptoms typically manifest two to eight days after ingesting the germ. An investigation points toward romaine lettuce originating from Arizona as the cause, but at this point no specific brand, grower, supplier, or distributor has been identified.

"Some people may not be included in CDC's case count because no bacterial isolates are available for the DNA fingerprinting needed to link them to the outbreak".

Ages of those in outbreak range from 12 to 84 years of age; and 69 percent are female.

The chopped romaine lettuce outbreak is not related to the E. coli O157: H7 outbreak involving leafy greens that began in late 2017 and was officially closed out on January 25, 2018.

Most people get sick from E. coli three to four days after consuming the bacteria. The CDC also advised restaurants against selling any romaine lettuce from Yuma.

When placed on food packaging, sensors in the patch can detect risky pathogens and send a signal to users' phones warning them it may not be safe to eat.

The leafy green E. coli O157: H7 outbreak ended up with 25 confirmed cases in 15 states and include nine hospitalizations and one death. The restaurants reported using bagged, chopped romaine lettuce to make salads.

In addition, before buying romaine lettuce at a grocery store or ordering it at a restaurant, check to see if it came from the Yuma, Arizona growing region. Symptoms include stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting, the CDC said.

The investigation is ongoing and CDC will provide updates as this story develops.
