Palestinians killed by Israeli fire in Gaza border clashes: ministry

More than 300 other people were hospitalised for gunshot wounds and tear gas inhalation, Gaza's health authority said.

The witnesses said that demonstrators threw stones at the Israeli armed forces, where soldiers fired back tear gas and rubber-coated metal bullets.

Some 42 Palestinians have been killed, including at least four children, and some 4,733 others have been injured by Israeli forces over the past month, as tens of thousands of Palestinian refugees come out to demand their collective right of return to their homeland.

The military says in other incidents Friday, Palestinian crowds rolled burning tires, hurled rocks and flown kites with flaming objects attached with the goal of damaging the fence and other Israeli targets.

Hundreds of protesters broke off from a larger protest and gathered next to the border fence. east of Gaza City.

In response, it said, "troops have used riot dispersal means and have fired in accordance with the rules of engagement".

"Israel's failure to consistently prosecute violations committed by members of its security forces, encourages them to use deadly force against their fellow unarmed human beings".

The commissioner says Israel has not heeded warnings by the United Nations and others, after troops used lethal force against unarmed protesters, killing 35 Palestinians and wounding more than 1,500.

Hussein called the loss of life deplorable and said a "staggering number" of injuries had been caused by live ammunition. Israel's foreign ministry tweeted condemnation of the Hamas-organized march.

Israel's United Nations envoy, Danny Danon, told the security council on Thursday that Hamas in Gaza was responsible for Palestinian casualties and that it was using innocent Palestinian women and children as human shields.

Hamas denies the Israeli accusations.

"We hold the occupation [Israel] responsible for the killing and martyrdom of Fadi, the killers of scientists will not escape punishment", senior Hamas official Khalil Al-Hayya said as the body was received in Gaza. That day will mark the 70th anniversary of Israel's establishment - an event Palestinians refer to as the "Nakba" or "Catastrophe".

Marchers are demanding the right to return to their homes seized by Israel in 1948.

More than 2 million Palestinians are packed into the narrow coastal enclave.

The clash erupted after demonstrators walked closer to the fence of the border between eastern Gaza Strip and Israel, where dozens of Israeli soldiers and snipers were stationed at the Israeli side.
