Prosecutor reviewing Republican complaints against Federal Bureau of Investigation

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions will not appoint a special counsel to investigate claims of political bias and overreach at the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice, but will allow a U.S. attorney to look into it, according to a letter he sent to Republican lawmakers Thursday.

Sessions' and Boyd's letters refer to multiple "senior federal prosecutors", but Flores declined to comment on who else Huber was working with on the review. Check back for updates.

Horowitz's review was announced Wednesday and the Office of the Inspector General said it will pertain to a "certain USA person" but did not disclose the identity of that person. The inspector general, some think that our inspector general is not very strong; but he has nearly 500, employees, most of which are lawyers and prosecutors; and they are looking at the FISA process.

Their requests come as President Trump and his allies have engaged in an anti-FBI campaign in apparent effort to undermine Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into his campaign's Russian Federation ties.

A Justice Department spokesman said Huber first began investigating various claims in the fall of 2017.

Sessions' referral of the allegations to the inspector general enraged President Donald Trump, who said Sessions should have ordered is own investigation. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., at least, said it did not preclude the need for a special counsel to "ensure the investigation is thorough and complete".

Huber, who has served in both Democratic and Republican administrations as a career prosecutor, almost had his tenure as USA attorney cut short a year ago. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, and Sen.

However, Sessions appointed him interim US attorney under the Federal Vacancies Reform Act and President Donald Trump renominated him last June.

"For instance, the IG's office does not have authority to compel witness interviews, including from past employees, so its investigation will be limited in scope in comparison to a Special Counsel investigation", Goodlatte said in a statement.

As is the custom, Mr. Huber submitted his resignation as USA attorney last March to the incoming Trump administration.

The two senators had written Horowitz last month asking him to look into several Russia-related matters, though more recently, they and other legislators said a second special counsel should be appointed.

Since then, Huber has taken on a leadership role on Sessions' advisory committee of United States attorneys that provide counsel to him and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
