Roma wins! Barcelona knocked out of UEFA Champions League

Roma wins! Barcelona knocked out of UEFA Champions League

Roma's Daniele De Rossi, left, scores his side's second goal during the Champions League quarterfinal second leg soccer match between Roma and FC Barcelona at Rome's Olympic Stadium, Tuesday, April 10, 2018.

Kostas Manolas was the hero as he rose high to a header in the 82nd minute to head it into the back of the net from a corner to send Roma fans into absolute delirium.

Roma took the lead in the 6th minute through Edin Džeko, the ideal start to mount the comeback, but they still needed two more as well as a clean sheet.

And following the match, Di Francesco said it was his tactical switch to a back three that set his team on their way to the historic win.

Roma had a spring in their step and were attacking in numbers as they looked for a quickfire second.

He was however unlucky not to control Radja Nainggolan's mishit shot when it flashed to him in the area just two minutes later.

But Dzeko took his chance at the other end after six minutes.

The visitors won another free kick from shooting range in the 38th minute as Luis Suarez was brought down but once again Messi could not find the target from 25 yards.

Captain De Rossi rifled the ball beyond Ter Stegen to double Roma's advantage and the home side were not finished there.

Ter Stegen parried a Stephan El Shaarawy effort away from the goal-line shortly after he arrived from the bench, but the decisive goal would soon arrive as Manolas nodded beyond the rooted goalkeeper from Cengiz Under's corner.

Then, in the fifth minute of stoppage time, Sergi Roberto struck to create a slice of Champions League history - no side had ever turned around a four-goal first-leg deficit before.

Alongside Manchester City, Barcelona were one of the favourite to win this year's Champions League, but we will see semi-finals featuring Liverpool and Roma instead.
