Showdown Looms as Migrant Caravans Swell at Mexico Border

The effort was organized by Pueblos Sin Fronteras, translated from Spanish as People Without Borders, which is not the same group as the Washington-based non-profit that provides computer classes to worldwide residents of the District of Columbia. Another 300 migrants traveling with the group plan to remain in Mexico. Jacobs said it is not enough for the applicant to merely state they are in fear for their lives.

"Both U.S. law and a United Nations treaty on the rights of refugees require that asylum-seekers get a fair hearing", Guerrero notes. All of the cases have been reviewed by lawyers.

Migrants said they fled their homes in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras because of death threats from local gangs, the murder of family members or political persecution.

What's the problem with migrants seeking asylum?

About 130 immigrants from Central America have arrived in the US-Mexico border in a so-called caravan.

Turning away someone seeking asylum without considering his claim violates national and worldwide law. Asylum clams will be closely scrutinized for fraud, and any migrants found ineligible will be swiftly deported, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Tuesday. Asylum seekers are screened and have their backgrounds checked and, depending on how they entered the country, may be detained pending a hearing.

A judge ruled that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme, which paved the way for two-year renewable work permits for undocumented migrants brought to the USA as children, must re-start after 90 days if the Trump administration can not offer an explanation as to why it is illegal.

Q:Is this caravan something new?

The group is a part of a larger caravan, almost 400 people in all, looking to seek asylum at the the San Ysidro Port of Entry.

This year's was the largest caravan yet. In early April, after scathing tweets from the US president, organizers said the group had become so big that it was unwieldy and would end its journey in Mexico City rather than continuing to the border.

A bus carrying Central American asylum seekers heads to Tijuana on April 24.

Trump cited the caravan as justification for the border wall he wants to build, even though the asylum-seekers plan to turn themselves in to border inspectors and are legally entitled to seek protection.

"If you enter our country illegally, you have broken the law and will be referred for prosecution", Nielsen said. Critics of the caravan contend that most migrants are driven not by a need for asylum but a desire to find better jobs and lives in the United States.

Still, most planned to press on with their asylum cases.

And it could spark a possible showdown with the Trump administration. But Trump has made the issue a top and contentious priority, framing it as a dire security concern and using language far more volatile than his predecessors.
