Suspect who killed deputy caught

A dayslong manhunt for a fugitive accused of gunning down a ME sheriff's deputy earlier this week concluded with an arrest Saturday afternoon.

A man accused of killing a sheriff's deputy was arrested Saturday outside a remote cabin, ending an intense manhunt in its fourth day in the woods of central Maine.

Law enforcement officials say the search for man accused of killing a deputy in ME is over.

"We can now focus on the important task of respectfully laying our fallen brother to rest". Somerset County Sheriff Dale Lancaster said more than 200 officers, including several from MA, assisted in the search efforts. Eugene Cole, who was killed Wednesday morning, were used to secure John Daniel Williams, the suspect in his shooting death.

Early on Saturday, residents near Martin Stream Road, Route 139, Route 8 and the Norridgewock area were asked to provide law enforcement with any game camera footage they may have to aid in the manhunt search. Helicopters, armored vehicles and scores of state, federal and local officers poured into Norridgewock during the search. "He really epitomized community policing even before there was community policing".

The team of law enforcement officers who found and captured fugitive John Williams.

He offered "limited resistance" when being arrested and taken to the Waterville Police Department for questioning, police said.

Williams will be detained during the weekend and will make his initial court appearance early in the week.

It was unclear if Williams has an attorney to speak on his behalf. Police declined to say whether he'd been apprehended, or had turned himself in.

Cole was 62 and a 13-year veteran of the department. Lancaster calls him an "outstanding employee" and "one of the finest deputies". Mr. Williams, be assured you'll be treated the same way Corporal Cole would've treated you if you had given him the opportunity: with dignity and respect.
