Trump's Caravan Tweet Draws Attention To Mexico's Migrant Policies

"The big Caravan of People from Honduras, now coming across Mexico and heading to our "Weak Laws" Border, had better be stopped before it gets there", Trump tweeted shortly before 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Irineo Mujica, director of Pueblo Sin Fronteras, the activist group behind the annual symbolic event created to draw attention to the plight of migrants, said the caravan would continue only to Puebla southeast of Mexico City, "but not in a massive way". "They must stop the big drug and people flows, or I will stop their cash cow, NAFTA", he concluded.

In a joint statement, the interior and foreign relations ministries said the migrants - mostly from the violent and tumultuous northern triangle of Central America: Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador - would be subject to "administrative procedures".

"Trump is trying to turn the Central American refugees and other immigrant communities against each other, and use them as a bargaining chip with Mexico", Pueblo Sin Fronteras said in a statement.

President Trump said on Tuesday that he planned to order the military to guard parts of the southern border until he can build a wall and tighten immigration restrictions, proposing a remarkable escalation of his efforts to crack down on migrants entering the country illegally. Trump keeps "blackmailing, offending and denigrating Mexico and Mexicans", he wrote on Twitter on Monday.

Mr. Trump, who has been stewing publicly for days about what he characterizes as lax immigration laws and the potential for an influx of Central American migrants to stream into the United States, said he had been discussing with Jim Mattis, the secretary of defense, about resorting to military deployments.

Nielsen later tweeted that their talk focused specifically on the annual migrant caravan. Its members are disproportionately from Honduras, which has high levels of violence and has been rocked by political upheaval in recent months following the re-election of US -backed president, Juan Orlando Hernández, in an intensely disputed election.

Maria Elena Colindres Ortega, a member of the caravan and, until January, a member of congress in Honduras, said she was fleeing political upheaval at home.

"We will continue", Gina Garibo said. They began as short processions of migrants, some dressed in biblical garb and carrying crosses, as an Easter-season protest against the kidnappings, extortion, beatings and killings suffered by many Central American migrants as they cross Mexico.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, left, talks with Canada's Chrystia Freelander and Mexico's Ildefonso Guajardo, both right. "But when the march ends, there are repercussions against the migrant and those that defend their rights".

"We accompany at least those who want to request asylum", Alex Mensing, Pueblo Sin Fronteras' program director, said.

Mexico's National Institute of Immigration (INAMI) will grant humanitarian visas to certain vulnerable individuals within the group, such as as pregnant women and people with disabilities, reports BuzzFeed's Adolfo Perez, who is embedded with the caravan. However, People Without Borders claims it will continue toward the border in smaller groups.

Typically, Central Americans have not fared well with U.S. asylum claims, particularly those from Honduras. "We really haven't done that before, or certainly not very much before".

Manuel Padilla, chief of the border patrol's Rio Grande Valley sector, one of the busiest crossing points on the U.S. Mexico border, said in an interview with Reuters that he worries the caravan could "generate interest for other groups to do the same thing", but he was not terribly nervous about coping with the group now traveling.
