WhatsApp increases age limit to 16 in Europe

WhatsApp increases age limit to 16 in Europe

The app, which is owned by Facebook, will ask users to confirm their age when prompted to agree new terms of service in the next few weeks.

Many tech companies are announcing updates to their privacy policy owing to the imminent launch of Europes General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) policy, which will come into effect on May 25, 2018.

WhatsApp, which had more than 1.5 billion users in January, said in a blog post, 'Our goal is simply to explain how we use and protect the limited information we have about you'.

WhatsApp will raise its minimum age to 16 across Europe.

If you live in any other country except those in the European Region, you must be at least 13 years old to use WhatsApp.

It is not clear how the age limit will be verified. This would also include a copy of their blocked contacts.

In the coming weeks, WhatsApp will be asking its users to accept the new terms of service.

Data sharing: We are not now sharing account information to improve your product and ads experience on Facebook. In the wake of the current Cambridge Analytica scandal engulfing parent company Facebook, the very same policy has, in fact, become a boon - in the wake of the crisis, WhatsApp clarified that its encryption policies meant that none of the user messages on the platform had been stored. For example, WhatsApp will now let users download a report detailing the sort of data that the app holds on them.

Meanwhile, Facebook too is upgrading its privacy policy to comply with Europes GDPR policy.

The EU's new privacy laws aim to give consumers greater control over the use of their data, including the ability to learn what information companies have on them as well as the ability to revoke consent for granting company's access to personal data. Failing to do so, they will not be able to see a fully personalised view of the platform.
