After Democrats' concern, Trump officials issue statement on election security

Describing a report on Russian interference presented by the intelligence community to president-elect Trump in January 2017, Clapper writes, "I remember just how staggering the assessment felt the first time I read it through from start to finish, and just how specific our conclusions and evidence were". Kirstjen Nielsen as she exited a closed-door meeting on Capitol Hill.

A representative of Nielsen's defended her Tuesday comments, saying the reporter's question that preceded them was misleading.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristjen Nielsen said on Tuesday that she was unaware of the intelligence community's assessment that. "We need to be prepared", she said.

"I want to be very clear what we have seen the Russians do is attempt to manipulate public confidence on both sides".

Nielsen insisted, however, that there's "no reason to doubt any intelligence community assessment".

A statement last week by the top Republican and Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee backed intelligence agencies' findings that Russian Federation sought to help swing the election to Mr. Trump.

Ms. Nielsen, who took office after the report's publication, was asked about its findings after a briefing on election security with FBI Director Christopher Wray and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats. "No, there are not tanks in the streets, but what's happening right now goes to the heart of who we are as a nation, and I say this not as a Democrat who lost an election but as an American afraid of losing a country".

The House intelligence committee reported last month that though Russian Federation did interfere in the United States election and wanted to hamper the Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton, it had not seen evidence the interference was meant to help Trump.

"We assess Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an influence campaign in 2016 aimed at the USA presidential election". All three agencies agree with this judgment.

"I know that the Intelligence Community can not serve our nation if facts are negotiable". "Russian goals included undermining faith in the US democratic process and harming a candidate's electability and potential presidency".

She stopped short of saying Russian Federation tried to sway the 2016 election in Donald Trump's favor.

But the Senate intelligence committee said last week that it agrees with the intelligence agencies' assessment.

Nielsen's apparent skepticism of the determination that Russian Federation favored Trump is in line with the conclusion reached by Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee. And all major intelligence community leaders - including those appointed by Trump - have endorsed the finding.
