Amazon Alexa heard and sent private chat

Amazon Alexa heard and sent private chat

But it happened to a couple in Portland where an Echo Dot smart speaker, powered by Alexa, reportedly secretly recorded a private conversation between a husband and wife and sent it to the man's colleague.

Ok, so the Amazon Echo spy story is being reported in the media as having misheard the Alexa word and then somehow mishearing a command to send a message to someone in that person's address book.

"Unplug your Alexa devices right now", a voice on the other line said.

Danielle said: "We unplugged all of them and he proceeded to tell us that he had received audio files of recordings from inside our house".

In a report to Engadget, Amazon officials offered a more detailed explanation. "At which point, the background conversation was interpreted as a name in the customers contact list", said the statement. "As unlikely as this string of events is, we are evaluating options to make this case even less likely", said the spokesperson.

"They said 'our engineers went through your logs, and they saw exactly what you told us, they saw exactly what you said happened, and we're sorry, '" Danielle told KIRO.

According to United States broadcaster Kiro 7, every room in the family home was wired with Amazon Echo devices to control the home's heating, lights and security - the flawless IoT cabin. The company said it would disable the phrase "Alexa, laugh" and instead change the command to "Alexa, can you laugh?" to ensure less false positives. He also didn't explain why it could have happened. "I'm never plugging that device in again", she said. Amazon says the Echo asked for confirmation of who to send the message to, and it thought it got the OK.

Danielle told KIRO 7 that the device did not tell her that it would be sending the recorded conversations.

Amazon has taken a lot of heat in the past because of conspiracy theories suggesting that the device might be sharing conversations with Central Intelligence Agency and NSA.

This isn't the first time that Amazon's smart speaker has garnered scrutiny over potential eavesdropping. The unusual behaviour was the result of a misheard command for which Amazon adjusted Alexa to not laugh unsettlingly at random. Amazon is yet to clarify this, but many users of the home speakers will ask whether there are cases where Alexa could be recording without their explicit permission.

It's unknown if the couple had the volume turned all the way down on their device or if they just didn't hear Alexa's multiple spoken replies during the message process.

These recordings are then stored on Amazon's servers.
