Andy Warhol's Magazine Is Closing Down

Interview Magazine, founded by Andy Warhol and British journalist John Wilcock in 1969, has shuttered after nearly 50 years. A month ago the editor had already left creative Director Karl Templer, being under investigation because of anonymous accusations of sexual harassment, and editorial Director Fabien Baron who took the magazine to court, demanding about 600 thousand dollars in unpaid royalties for his work.

Purchased by billionaire art collector and publisher Peter Brant in 1989, the magazine had languished over the better part of the last decade, undergoing a series of redesigns, relaunches, and changes both at the top of the masthead and among its executive ranks.

Once referred to as "the crystal ball of pop", Interview has featured a wide roster of cultural and entertainment world figures on its cover: David Bowie, Aretha Franklin, Annie Lennox and Kiera Knightley, to name a few.

While Interview's history has been tarnished in recent years as a result of these alleged misdeeds, the publication had been celebrated for its cutting edge approach, including a willingness to celebrate queer artists and LGBT allies by placing them on the cover.

Interview, the celebrity interview magazine co-founded in 1969 by gay pop-artist Andy Warhol, officially shut down today after facing two unresolved lawsuits from former executives who claimed the magazine stiffed them for enormous sums. Staff of the publication, which has filed for chapter seven bankruptcy, were informed of the decision in a meeting today.

In 1977, riffing on his famous dictum that in the future everyone in America would be famous for 15 minutes, Warhol told the late writer and editor Glenn O'Brien that when he was drunk, "I tell everyone they can be on the cover of Interview".

In 2016, Interview's former president Dan Rangone sued the publication for $170,000 in unpaid wages, according to WWD. Peter Brant owns the magazine, while his daughter Kelly is the president.

Truman Capote was one of Interview's earliest contributors, and Warhol also conducted many interviews. The early years had a decidedly queer aesthetic, with divas like Diana Ross, Cher, and Madonna on multiple issues, as well as cult favorites like Shelley Duvall, Liza Minnelli, Annie Lennox, and Grace Jones getting their due.

What do you think of the closure of Interview magazine?

Interview also always stuck to its guns.
