Coli update: You can now safely eat romaine again

Romaine lettuce tied to a recent outbreak of E. coli is likely no longer on store shelves or in restaurants, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said today (May 16). Iowa, Nebraska, and OR have now joined the list of states reporting E. coli cases linked to romaine lettuce.

Any romaine lettuce being sold now is nearly certainly not from the Yuma, Arizona region and so unlikely to carry the E. coli bacteria that's been making people sick, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. The state health lab confirmed the link to the Yuma region, Rooney said. The CDC determined that the outbreak was tied to romaine lettuce from Yuma, Arizona, and has advised consumes to avoid buying romaine lettuce from that region for weeks.

The FDA said it will focus on identifying the factors that led to lettuce being contaminated across multiple supply chains.

The CDC has stopped advising consumers to throw away romaine lettuce if they can't confirm where it's from.

The outbreak has made 172 people sick in 32 states, and one person has died, the CDC said. Sixty-five percent of ill people are female. Of those who became ill, 75 have been hospitalized, including 20 with kidney failure.

The Food and Drug Administration has been trying to discover exactly where and when the romaine involved in this latest outbreak was contaminated.

The agency continues with its investigation to find the source of the contamination.
