E-cigarette liquids looking too kid friendly, FDA says

E-cigarette liquids looking too kid friendly, FDA says

Kids who are exposed to such products are at high risk of having seizures, falling into comas, respiratory failure or death from cardiac arrest.

E-liquid manufacturers market their products to look eerily similar to kid-friendly sugary snacks such as juice boxes, candy, and cookies, complete with cartoon images.

Two federal agencies have issues warnings to 13 manufacturers of high nicotine e-cigarette goods to stop making their product packaging look like children's juice boxes, sweets and cookies.

Some of the packages targeted by regulators look like fruit juices, Warhead sweets and Nilla Wafers.

A list of the commercially sold look-alike packaging was posted online by the FDA and the Federal Trade Commission.

The Food and Drug Administration is cracking down on companies that make e-cigarette liquid look like candy. According to the National Poison Data System, there were a total of 8,269 e-cigarette and liquid nicotine exposures among children younger than six between January 2012 and April 2017.

No deaths have been reported with the products highlighted Tuesday, regulators said. "Companies selling these products have a responsibility to ensure they aren't putting children in harm's way or enticing youth use".

Twelve of the vendors issued warning letters on Tuesday did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.

"Looking at these side-to-side comparisons is alarming", said FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb.

The latest warnings come one week after the FDA sent forty warning letters to companies on the sale of tobacco products to minors, particularly those made by Juul Labs Inc. In some states, the requirement is 21 and older.

Also ask family members, house guests, and other visitors who vape to keep bags or coats that hold e-cigarettes or e-liquids up and away and out of reach and sight of children and pets.

The FDA gained authority to regulate e-cigarettes in 2016, but anti-smoking advocates have criticized the agency for not working more aggressively to stop companies from appealing to underage users. Antismoking advocates have criticized the agency for not moving to ban flavors in tobacco products.
