Facebook suspends 200 apps for misusing data, privacy probe continues

Facebook suspends 200 apps for misusing data, privacy probe continues

The social media giant said in a blog post Monday that the suspensions resulted from its investigation into all apps that had access to large amounts of information before Facebook changed its platform policies in 2014.

After being burned to a crisp having been found to be manhandling Facebook users' data, Cambridge Analytica's ashes blew away on 2 May.

In March, following Facebook's infamous data privacy scandal, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a full audit of all Facebook-connected apps.

"It will show people if they or their friends installed an app that misused data before 2015 - just as we did for Cambridge Analytica", Archibong said.

Facebook has failed to fully answer 39 questions submitted by United Kingdom members of parliament that aim to explore the social network's approach to data privacy and fake news, according to the parliamentary committee charged with investigating the matter. They had been passed from a university lecturer to some students for a course project on creating a tool for processing Facebook data.

It did not name the apps that have been suspended but said they would be subject to a more thorough investigation into how they handle user data.

Facebook is once again at the center of a scandal over data mining on its platform, after it was discovered that another personality quiz hosted on the social network harvested the personal information of some three million people.

On Reddit, readers are condemning IBM for sending more than 100 executives to Capitol Hill this week in an effort to prevent US policy makers from copying GDPR, Europe's new privacy standards, which give citizens the right to access their personal data and learn how it's being used, prevents companies from processing personal data unless users give explicit consent, and requires them to adopt privacy by design principles, among other restrictions.

Facebook also fired a parting shot at the committee, as it pointed out that it had held lengthy meetings and evidence sessions across the world, provided written submissions and that "one of the most senior people in the company has given 5 hours of testimony" to the MPs.

Apparently, even the 200 suspended apps are expected to be further investigated via interviews and RFI requests. In addition, they will also tell individuals by means of this site.

In 2016, Facebook believed CA when it said that it had deleted the data it had stored, only to find out the truth in 2018 after a whistleblower came forward.

Facebook's response to the story has led to a promised investigation into the myPersonality quiz and associated apps.

Do you think it's time governments took legal action against Facebook for these constant data leak issues?

It may be months or longer before we know for certain which of the 200 apps got access to our personal data.
