Handicapped Daniel Ricciardo Holds on to Monaco Grand Prix Win

Handicapped Daniel Ricciardo Holds on to Monaco Grand Prix Win

The crash called for a virtual safety auto, making Monaco the seventh straight Grand Prix in the 2018 season to see either a safety vehicle or its virtual counterpart, but the condition was rapidly lifted, disappearing on lap 74 as lapped Stoffel Vandoorne exited the pit lane on hypersoft tires, directly between Ricciardo and Vettel, a secondary obstacle, adding further dirty air to Vettel's woes.

"From two years ago I feel we got some redemption now, we can put 2016 behind us", he added.

Webber's former employers Red Bull look like the team to beat after Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen set a blistering pace in practice on Thursday.

"So we'll definitely do everything we can to get it done".

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel - who finished second, and is a director of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association, which pushed for the switch to more durable tyres - refused to talk about the issue. Much of the race was dictated Daniel Ricciardo's wounded vehicle at the front, which had been down on power due to an MGU-K issue. The New England Patriots quarterback was able to showcase some of his famous talent in the Monaco harbour, lobbing a pass from one ship to another to connect with Ricciardo during a promotional Red Bull event.

"I think I can show more emotion today than yesterday", Ricciardo said. I felt a loss of power and I thought the race was done. "For a few seconds I just wanted to close my eyes and start crying". Stroll would soon develop a puncture as a result of contact with Ericsson, and the Ricciardo-Vettel parade would have to dodge him on lap 10.

With Sebastian Vettel hovering menacingly behind and more than half the race left to run, the Australian optimisitcally asked if it would get better - the response was that it would not.

Vettel said it had been a tricky race and "Daniel had the answer at all times".

Hamilton, in third place, kicked off the pit stops on Lap 12 but filtered back onto the track behind Ocon and lost any advantage from an undercut. He immediately fell into the clutches of Vettel, who went into full-on attack mode.

Starting from 12th position, Stoffel always faced a hard afternoon.

However, his team also warned the 20-year-old, who crashed again in practice, to keep his overtaking clean for the rest of the race. "I've done everything I can so far, let's finish this job tomorrow".

Neither man could match the Australian's pace on the hypersoft tyres, with Vettel 0.229 seconds slower. If they want to push, we need to produce more consistent tyres, less sensitive to overheating, so that they can push.
