How Twitter reacts: Australia name Justin Langer as new head coach

There are also a couple of Ashes series coupled with World T20 in 2020 and 50-over World Cup in 2019 as the new coach will have to start building the side across formats from now on. He will take the office of head coach from May 22 onwards.

Both Langer and Lehmann shared dressing rooms in Steve Waugh's Australia, a feared and brilliant team that made no apologies for crushing opponents with aggression and intimidation.

The former Test opener has been signed on a four-year deal which will see Australia through to the World Cup and next home Ashes series.

He was a national assistant coach for several years and served as interim coach in a T20 series against Sri Lanka in 2017.

He was appointed as the batting coach for the national team from 2009-12 before taking over as head coach in Western Australia in 2012.

Former captain Steve Smith, vice-captain David Warner were banned for one year, while player Cameron Barcroft was handed a nine-month suspension, for their roles in the incident.

At his first press conference since his appointment was announced, Langer vowed to restore the faith in the Australian cricket team and win back the confidence of the public, but also added that Smith, Bancroft and Warner could all rejoin the Baggy Greens in the future.

"It's hard to replace their runs and their experience", Langer said when asked how he planned to cover the loss of the pair who were responsible for 37 per cent of the Test match runs Australia scored since 2014.

Warner had fallen out with several teammates after being identified as the architect of the ball-tampering plot which brought Australian cricket to its knees. They have all got areas.

"We've all made mistakes".

He felt Australia's players would need to "modify their behaviour a bit", but said the nation expected their teams to play tough as well as fair. I think some of the best banter is amongst each other to try to get the opposition thinking about other things.

Just as Langer defines mental toughness as the ability to bring 100 per cent focus to the next ball bowled or faced, he is adamant that culture is simple to identify.

"To me, that's worth more than all the gold in the world", he said.

"There are some big tournaments coming up".

"But ultimately, if I fast forward it, the Indian Test tour in about three or four years' time (2021), to me that's the ultimate". However, Langer believes his team's greatest challenge will be winning in India.

In 2001, the team came to India at the back of a 15-match unbeaten run and it looked like the curse might finally come to an end.

"If you want to sustain success, you've got to have depth". "I would say, without being in it (at South Africa), camaraderie wasn't as right as it needed to be". I like them to be tight.

His team would still play aggressive cricket and sledging will still have its place.

"It can't be about the individuals, it has to be about the team and if we promote that elite mateship then we'll be okay".

CA chief executive James Sutherland described him as the "standout" candidate for the job.

Justin Langer has been appointed as the new Australia coach after Darren Lehmann stepped down.
