Iowa Just Banned Abortions For Any Baby With A Heartbeat

Republican Governor Kim Reynolds signed the "Heartbeat" bill, which severely restricts the practice of abortion in the midwest state.

Within a half hour, the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa announced it will go to court to block implementation of the law before it takes effect July 1.

The home passed the legislation on Tuesday night time having a 51-46 vote, Iowa Public Radio noted.

Critics argued that the bill would ban abortions before some women even know they're pregnant.

MS had enacted a law earlier this year banning abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, but it's on hold after a court challenge.

"Given that there has been a confirmation of a conservative judge on the Supreme Court, and there are so many Trump nominees to other federal courts, I think the anti-abortion movement really feels emboldened to pursue unconstitutional abortion bans", Shumaker said. The bill has been significantly controversial in the state, and there have been many protests.

Planned Parenthood is Iowa's largest provider of abortions but does not have a Sioux City office.

Jeanne Mancini, President of March for Life applauded Reynolds and said the law "will not only save lives", but also "reminds us that abortion stops a beating heart". "Instead, we will protect the fundamental right of Iowa women to control their bodies and their lives".

Iowa set to ban abortions after six weeks

"However, this is bigger than just a law", she said. "But I think many of us still never expected that Governor Reynolds would so swiftly jump to sign a bill that is so clearly unconstitutional".

According to the Register, proponents of the bill hope it will spark a legal debate that ultimately overturns Roe v. Wade in the Supreme Court.

Abortion opponents aim to land abortion questions back in front of the nation's top court, where they believe the 5-4 conservative majority could sharply curtail abortion access or ban it outright.

CBS reports that Planned Parenthood and the ACLU have promised to sue the state over the law.

Abortion rates have declined nationwide in the last years, but research has found the procedure is still fairly common: About one in four women will have an abortion by the age of 45.

"As Pope Francis has said, 'Let us respect and love human life, especially vulnerable life in a mother's womb.' We call upon the judiciary to once again recognize that all life should be protected from the moment of conception to natural death", the bishops said.

Abortion rights activists rallied Friday on the grounds of the statehouse to speak against the new law and Reynolds.
