Moscow: 4 Russian soldiers killed in Syria's Dayr al-Zawr

Moscow: 4 Russian soldiers killed in Syria's Dayr al-Zawr

"During the fighting, which lasted for almost an hour, the military destroyed 43 terrorists and six all-terrain vehicles with large-caliber armaments installed on them", the ministry said.

Four Russian soldiers have died in Syria as a result of a terrorist attack.

On Sunday, Tass, citing a defense ministry statement, said "a few mobile terrorist groups" attacked an artillery battery belonging to Syrian government forces for one hour at undisclosed time. "Some of those Russian nationals were government troops, but not all of them", said Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman on Sunday.

The remaining 26 have been all Syrian forces, he advised AFP.

In Moscow did not specify the date or the exact location of the attack on the Syrian positions. "Military doctors struggled to the end for the lives of two wounded soldiers, but to save them failed", - said the defense Ministry of the Russian Federation.

Five Russian soldiers were also injured and were promptly taken to the Russian military hospital, it said. The Observatory has been a fairly reliable source of war casualties throughout Syria's seven year civil war.

A steadfast ally of President Bashar al-Assad, Moscow has helped his army recapture swathes of territory since 2015 by providing air strikes and ground troops. It said the jihadists had targeted a group of Syrian and allied Russian troops in Deir Ezzor province on Wednesday.

Officially Russia claimed about four perished Russians, while Syria reported about 100 soldiers to be killed.

On May 21, the General Command of the Syrian Army and Armed Forces announced in a statement that complete security was restored to Damascus and its countryside after al-Hajar al-Aswad district and al-Yarmouk camp had been totally purged of Daesh terrorists.
