Most Wanted ISIS Leaders Captured in Iraq

According to Iraqi security advisor Hisham al-Hashimi, who spoke with Reuters, the captured leaders include Saddam Jamal, a Syrian who served as the Islamic State's governor of Syria's eastern Euphrates region, and three field commanders: Syrian Mohamed al-Qadeer, Omar al-Karbouli, and Essam al-Zawbai.

In a statement Thursday, May 10, 2018, coalition spokesman Army Col. Ryan Dillon said that US -backed Syrian forces have captured five senior Islamic State group leaders. The capture of all five was announced on Iraqi state TV on Wednesday.

The men have since appeared on Iraqi television in yellow prison uniforms; with officials describing them as "some of the most wanted" leaders of the terrorist group.

Eithawi was first reported to have been captured in a town east of Istanbul in February, after being tracked entering Turkey from Syria under his brother's name. Could 2017 be a year of terror?

Iraqi and USA intelligence spent several weeks interrogating Abu Zeid to acquire information about the location of the other leaders, who were in hiding.

Eithawi and Jamal are the two most senior ISIS figures ever to be captured alive.

The US-led coalition used the information to launch a devastating air strike in April which killed 39 suspected ISIS members near Hajin, in the Deir el-Zour district of Syria, an official said.

The coalition between America and Baghdad created to combat terror has been praised after the operation's success.

Iraq has recently engaged in cross-border operations against IS in Syria, most recently on May 6 in the al-Dashisha area, located near the Iraqi border.
