North Korea Willing to Talk to US 'At Any Time'

Trump on Thursday announced his withdrawal from what would have been the first-ever meeting between a serving United States president and a North Korean leader, scheduled for Singapore on June 12, in a letter to Kim, citing North Korea's "tremendous anger and open hostility".

"We never expected it to be easy", she said.

North Korea's ally China says the parties involved in the now-canceled U.S.

North Korea and South Korea march together at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. It was a very nice statement they put out. Hours after North Korea dismantles its nuclear testing ground in front of foreign journalists, Trump announces he's pulling out of his summit with Kim, citing the North's "tremendous anger and open hostility".

President Donald Trump speaks on North Korea in the Roosevelt Room of the White House, May 24, 2018.

January 1: Following months of provocative weapons tests that included the detonation of a purported thermonuclear warhead and three long-range missile launches, Kim says in his New Year's address that he has a nuclear button on his desk but also calls for improved relations with South Korea.

BPR reported Thursday that North Korea demolished its Punggye-ri nuclear test site, fulfilling a commitment made by the Kim regime last month, just before Trump cancelled the summit. Trump tweeted, "This is very good news for North Korea and the World" and "big progress!"

Moon hastily convened a middle-of-the-night meeting of his top security officials before expressing "deep regret" over the summit's cancellation, urging direct talks between Washington and Pyongyang and adding that denuclearization of the Korean peninsula should not be delayed.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, speaking to a Senate committee on Thursday, would not confirm whether Seoul had been notified. "President Trump and Kim Jong Un are engaged in a high-stakes game of chicken based on the shared assumption that the other wants and needs the summit more".

Over the Easter weekend, Mr Trump's Central Intelligence Agency chief and nominee for secretary of state Mike Pompeo travels secretly to Pyongyang where he meets Kim and begins to lay the groundwork for the landmark summit.

According to Massachusetts Institute of Technology associate professor of political science Vipin Narang, "This is an inflection point in the administration policy toward North Korea".

The hardline camp would be emboldened and empowered by any future North Korean nuclear or long-range missile test, predicts Narang.

Trump didn't mention North Korea during what, at times, sounded like a campaign speech. "I hope this won't be his only opportunity to help resolve the conflict with North Korea".
