Pelicans coach was still scared despite big Game 3 lead against Warriors

Pelicans coach was still scared despite big Game 3 lead against Warriors

When the series shifted to New Orleans for Game 3, the Pelicans' bench outclassed that of the Dubs, and the Pelicans won. And so what I think you have to do, you have to play well enough to win the game, then that right there does all the talking. The biggest difference was the decisiveness with which Davis continually made the next play - whether it was a shot, a drive, a pass, a cut, or a screen - and kept the Pelicans' offense flowing all night.

"We locked in a lot more on their shooters than in the first two games", Clark said of the Pels' general defensive philosophy.

Had they gone down 3-0 in the series, their season would have almost been guaranteed to be over.

Davis and the Pelicans may not end up winning this series, but they certainly are proving that they should be taken seriously as contenders.

Davis had a slow start to the game, missing several shots while being double teamed, but red hot shooting from the perimeter opened up things for Davis and he responded with a series of impressive dunks, twisting shots and short jumpers. The Pelicans contested just about everything the Warriors put up.

After struggling in the first quarter the Warriors started to heat up, specifically Klay Thompson as he recorded 20 points in the quarter. An 8-2 run before half time would shrink the Pelicans lead to only 6 heading into the locker room. Jumping out to a 13 points first quarter lead and never looking back.

The Pelicans made 50 percent of their shots (48 of 96), including 45.2 percent of their 3-point attempts (14 of 31). It's not just that their shooters were off, although they were.

Despite all the talk, however, the Pelicans didn't shoot a single free throw in the first quarter, yet finished the frame up nine, even while Davis scored only 3 points.

Was it expected that Rondo deal one fewer assist than Golden State's team total of 22?

The Pelicans held the Warriors to just 38% from the field through three quarters, while the Pelicans shot 46% from downtown by the time the fourth quarter began. The Golden State Warriors are averaging 109 points on 46.5 percent shooting and allowing 102.5 points on 43.4 percent shooting. New Orleans outrebounded the Warriors 54 to 44 and finished with a 19-12 advantage in second-chance points. Stephen Curry, in his second game back after a sprained knee sidelined him more than a month, missed 13 of 19 shots and finished with 19 points. The Pelicans enjoyed a layup line en route to Anthony Davis (33 points) and Nikola Mirotic (16) attacking the basket easily. He also added 4 steals to his impressive stat line.

The Pelicans also received some unexpectedly hot shooting from subs Solomon Hill and Ian Clark.
