Pompeo waging psychological warfare to undermine Iran's economy: former official

Echoing Maloney's assessment of Pompeo's newly unveiled "Plan B" for nuclear negotiations-which comes around two weeks after President Donald Trump violated the Iran nuclear accord and placed the US on the path to yet another war in the Middle East-National Iranian American Council (NIAC) president Trita Parsi arguedthat the Trump administration's demands are intentionally unrealistic and "clearly created to ensure there can not be any new negotiation". "America did not create this need for changed behavior".

A bad decision such as imposing even tougher sanctions on Iran, an attempt at regime change, or a military strike of any sort would push the country towards a military theocracy far more repressive and uncompromising than before both at home and overseas. The leaders in Tehran will have no doubt about our seriousness. "After our sanctions come in force, it will be battling to keep its economy alive".

The address comes as Trump focuses on a related gambit with nuclear-armed North Korea. Pompeo said that the long list of demands was Iran's fault, and that crippling sanctions would bring them back to the negotiating table. He says the Trump administration prefers for it to be a treaty that is ratified by Congress. "What has the Iranian revolution given to the Iranian people?" he said.

Germany's economy minister earlier told a newspaper the Berlin government would help German firms with business in Iran where it could, but could not entirely shield them from the USA decision to quit the Iran nuclear deal and reimpose sanctions. Britain, France and Germany also signed the nuclear deal, and after Trump rejected their pleas to stay in it, they are striving to keep it alive without violating US sanctions. Pompeo demanded that Iran cease from a range of activities throughout the Middle East that have long drawn the ire of the US and its allies.

These essentially address every aspect of Iran's missile program and what the U.S. calls its "malign influence" across the region, including support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Hezbollah and Huthi rebels in Yemen.

She also underscored Iran's adherence to the JCPOA, reiterating that the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed ten times that Iran had delivered on "all its nuclear related commitments" in line with the deal.

"We would of course have wished that an important and strong partner like the USA had remained in the Vienna accord", Peter Beyer, coordinator for trans-Atlantic relations in German Chancellor Angela Merkel's government, said in a ZDF television interview on Tuesday. "The Iranian wave of destruction in the region in just the last few years is proof that Iran's nuclear aspirations can not be separated from the overall security picture", he added. "And even if European companies make their own minds up and decide to end contracts with Iran, you still have the Russians and the Chinese out there who can do quite well in terms of buying Iranian oil".

Mike Pompeo Threatens to Impose the 'Strongest Sanctions in History' on Iran

He said at least 10 pages of the JCPOA have been overlooked because six or seven articles of the deal are about the USA commitments.

"Iran will never again have carte blanche to dominate the Middle East", Mr Pompeo said.

It is increasingly clear that Trump's decision to withdraw the U.S. from the JCPOA and his escalating anti-Iranian rhetoric has given the hardliners in Iran the excuse they needed to discredit Rouhani's moderate government and pave the way for his possible removal from office. A longtime congressional opponent of the nuclear accord, he reverted to that hawkish posture Monday, evoking a time when he said the United States could bomb away Iran's nuclear program with "under 2,000 sorties".

Michael Gahler, a German conservative in the European Parliament, warned that Washington's get-tough approach would only further strengthen the position of hardliners in Tehran, while doing little to improve Israel's security. We will ensure freedom of navigation on the waters of the region.

He insisted diplomacy was the first choice, however. U.S. negotiators tried unsuccessfully to get Iran to admit it tried to build one in the early 2000s. It they make the decision quickly, that would be wonderful.

Pompeo is laying out an onerous list of 12 "basic requirements" demands on Iran that he says should be included.
