Shopian encounter: 2 militants killed, as many soldier injured

Bhat's mother said she spoke with him last on Friday and he gave no indication about his plan to take up arms. However, these efforts did not yield any results. Confirming that the encounter was over, Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police Shesh Paul Vaid tweeted that the body of all five terrorists had been recovered.

"We made repeated appeals to them through public address system to surrender".

It is reported that Dr Bhat is believed to be trapped in an encounter along with top Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commander.

Shopian Senior Superintendent of Police Shailendra Mishra used public address system to offer the terrorists an option to surrender.

In occupied Kashmir, six more youth have been martyred in the ongoing act of state terrorism by the Indian troops in Badigam area of Shopian district, today, bringing the death toll to 10 during the past 24 hours. A local youth was also killed when hit by a police "bunker vehicle" during a stone-pelting incident at nearby Noor Bagh.

A mob torched two fire tenders during the protests.

"The search operation turned into an encounter after the hiding militants fired upon the forces, which was retaliated", a police official had said.

Para commandos of the army were also deployed to help fight the holed up militants during Sunday's gunfight. Additional security forces have been rushed to further tighten the cordon around the village, they said, adding that in the initial firing, a soldier and an SOG jawan were injured, who were later shifted to the base hospital here. He had received a bullet wound in his head, the hospital sources said.

The slain civilians were identified as Asif Ahmad Mir, Zubair Ahmad Negroo of Ayangund Rajpora, Yasir of Shopian, Adil Ahmad, a resident of Ashmuji in Kulgam district and Sajad Ahmad Mir of Verinag Dooru.
