University Professor Among 10 Killed in India-administered Kashmir

Adil Khanday (20): Hizb militant, Khanday and another associate were killed in a gunfight with security forces in south Kashmir's Shopian district on October 22, 2015.

In Kasmir's southern districts, which have become hotbeds of violent confrontation between rebels and security forces, clashes often end with the killing of civilians who flock to the scene in support of the separatist fighters.

Kashmir University, where Bhat worked, suspended classes and and instituted a curfew for two days beginning Monday to prevent protests after he left to join the militant group. "Police expect youths not to resort to violence and help maintain peace", he added.

The security forces including Rashtriya Rifles, Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) surrounded Badigam following an alert about the presence of militants.

New Delhi and Islamabad both claim the region in full, but rule parts of it. Pakistan administers one-third of Kashmir, with the remaining two-thirds under India's control.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti expressed anguish and grief over the death of five civilians.

"I am shocked by yesterday's killings". Unfortunately stones and guns are in the hands of poor children.

SSP Shopian Shailendra Mishra had said earlier, "We appealed to them to surrender but continuous firing from inside is underway, can not confirm the number of terrorists yet". The leaders said that the people of Kashmir are bearing the brunt of government's failure. The Kashmir University authorities have chose to shut down the university for two days. "Please forgive me for my mistakes". He was a great teacher and never discussed anything with us. Rafi's brother Imtiyaz Ahmad told Mirror that the slain professor had called his father in the morning and said, "I am sorry if I have hurt you, and this is my last call as I am going to meet Allah". The Head of Department of sociology at Kashmir University, Peerzada Amin, said, "Rafi was very competent".

"We appeal to the people, traders, lawyers, civil society, students and employees to march peacefully to the civil secretariat where the leadership will hold a sit-in as a protest against the unabated killings", the statement said.

On Friday, Bhat who was married three years ago, delivered what turned out to be his last lecture at the university. The officer asked the family to go to the encounter spot with police and persuade Bhat to surrender. "Four civilians were also killed", Paul told ThePrint.
