Facebook made some private posts public for as many as 14M

"We'd like to apologize for this mistake", Erin Egan, Facebook's chief privacy officer, said in today's statement.

The bug affected posts shared between May 18 and May 27, though Facebook started rolling out a fix on May 22. Facebook is now notifying 14 million people around the world who were potentially impacted by the bug to review their status updates and lock them down tighter if need be.

The news follows recent furor over Facebook's sharing of user data with device makers, including China's Huawei. People could have changed the individual audience setting on posts, but would have had to notice the setting was different from what they'd chosen.

Posts are public by default for new accounts, but every Facebook user can limit who sees each post by using what the company calls an "audience selector".

Facebook said a software bug was behind the glotch which saw users' private posts made public over several days last month.

Featured items are meant to be publicly visible, but Facebook accidentally made it so that setting applied to all posts made on a user's profile.

The social network is working to rehabilitate its relationship with users after the Cambridge Analytica controversy, which drew renewed attention to how much data the company collects.

Huawei, a company flagged by US intelligence officials as a national security threat, was the latest device maker at the center of a fresh wave of allegations over Facebook's handling of private data.

Affected Facebook users received a notification on the app or website starting Thursday.

Facebook, which has 2.2 billion users, says the bug was active from May 18 until May 27.

When people post to Facebook, the service suggests and audience for their posts, based on past privacy settings.

Facebook reassured users the problem has now been fixed. That way, users can reset a post that was inadvertently set to public back to being shared just with friends if they would like.
