FIFA 2018: Saudi Arabia stun Egypt 2-1 despite Salah strike

FIFA 2018: Saudi Arabia stun Egypt 2-1 despite Salah strike

Saudi Arabia fought back after falling behind to Mohamed Salah's second FIFA World Cup goal to claim a 2-1 win over Egypt in their final Group A game of Russian Federation 2018.

Egypt continued to push for a second and Trezeguet twice went close with curling efforts but Saudi Arabia ended the first half on top and were awarded a penalty when Ahmed Fathy was deemed to have stopped a cross with his hand.

No sooner had the veteran goalkeeper finished celebrating and he was facing another spot-kick, this time given after the lightest of shirt tugs by Ali Gabr on Al Muwallad.

Brilliant as the save was, El-Hadary wasn't able to duplicate it a few moments later when Salman Alfaraj got a second penalty shot in stoppage time.

Egypt's Essam El Hadary, 45, became the oldest player to feature at a World Cup and saved Fahad Al Muwallad's penalty.

Egypt crashed out of the World Cup after losing to Russian Federation 3-1 on Tuesday, with Salah returning to action for the first time in three weeks following a shoulder injury but unable to save his team.

Both Egypt and Saudi Arabia lost their first two games and will be hoping to pocket an elusive win in Volgograd to avoid finishing bottom of the group.

El-Hadary, who is regarded as one of Africa's best goalkeepers of all time, started his career in 1996 and is a four-time African Cup of Nations champion.

In their first game against Uruguay, Egypt lacked the injured Salah's quality on the ball and his lack of match fitness showed against Russian Federation despite the goal.

Salem Aldawsari scored with nearly the last kick of the match for the Saudis, shooting from a tight angle inside the Egypt penalty area and poking the ball past El Hadary.

Saudi Arabia tried to test Al Hadary early, with Hussain Al Mogahwi attempting a speculative chance from distance in the third minute, but it hooked well wide of the goal.

But in the fifth minute of second-half injury-time, Al-Dawsari popped up in the box to beat El Hadary with the last kick of the match and secure a famous Saudi win.

Egypt, making their first World Cup appearance since 1990, had been tipped to advance into the knockout rounds after looking strong in the qualifiers.

But the Liverpool man should be backed to end the tournament on a high and follow on from his club form, putting Saudi Arabia to the sword.
