FPJ's dream XI predictions for Uruguay vs Russian Federation

FPJ's dream XI predictions for Uruguay vs Russian Federation

Both Russia and Uruguay already secured places in the next Round of Last 16, each enjoying wins over opponents in their two previous group stage matches. This might have been a sign of things to come.

There was plenty of noise from the stands - so Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera will have had many quieter games in terms of volume - but he had little work to do as he became his country's all-time leading appearance maker at the World Cup.

Lucas Torreira, the 22-year-old defensive midfielder for Uruguay, addressed the persistent rumors that he's headed to Arsenal.

Much of the pre-match focus of this game has been on whether we should be suspicious of Russia's stunning start to the competition.

However, Uruguay nearly extended its lead in the 80th minute when Cavani and Suarez raced forward with only one defender to deal with. Subs - Rodriguez 6, De Arrascaeta 5, Gomez.

Russia: Akinfeev - Kudryashov, Ignashevich, Kutepov, Smolnikov - Gazinski (Kuziaev, 46), Zobnin - Cheryshev, Al.

Russian Federation had their World Cup bubble burst by Uruguay in their Group A match on Monday (June 25) as the South Americans ran out 3-0 winners. That might have been a Russian equaliser.

The hosts retaliated, in style typical of their efforts so far this tournament, when Artem Dzyuba nodded down to Cheryshev - who contrived to volley straight at the goalkeeper.

A massive deflection off Denis Cheryshev made it 2-0, and two quick red cards for Igor Smolnikov effectively killed the game as a contest.

And Akinfeev was acting nearly single-handedly the last line of defence as Uruguay wasted a great chance to make it three just five minutes later.

Russian Federation were badly missing their own midfield ace Aleksandr Golovin, rested for fear of another booking that could have seen him miss the next game.

Sitting safely on their seventh successive clean sheet, Uruguay pushed for a third late on but Cavani's attempts to get on the scoresheet were initially fruitless, slicing a 20-yard shot horribly wide from a chance he created himself.

Akinfeev kept his side's fading hopes alive by denying Betancur a goal on his 21st birthday five minutes later, although they were dealt a further blow nine minutes before the break when Smolnikov, who had earlier been booked for a foul on Cavani, felled Laxalt and received a second yellow card.

Uruguay's Edinson Cavani celebrates scoring their third goal with Diego Godin. Three goals to the good.
