I did a great service in firing ex-FBI chief Comey

US President Donald Trump lashed out at former FBI Director James Comey, as well as two FBI officials, after the Justice Department Inspector General's report criticized the agency's handling of the Hillary Clinton email probe.

The 500-page report also concluded that the Clinton email probe was not tainted by political bias, even though it was critical of two Federal Bureau of Investigation staff members who exchanged highly charged political messages over Trump, finding that their texts created the appearance of bias and cast cloud over the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Beyond delving into Comey's conduct, the watchdog report addressed other topics, including anti-Trump text messages exchanged between Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Peter Strzok and former Federal Bureau of Investigation lawyer Lisa Page.

In messages exchanged on November 9, 2016 and documented starting on page 417 of the report, FBI Attorney 2 and other FBI employees discuss their distress over the results of the presidential election and insult Trump supporters.

The report says the watchdog "did not find documentary or testimonial evidence" that political bias directly affected parts of the probe, it says Page and Strzok's conduct "cast a cloud over the entire FBI investigation".

But he was removed from the post in July 2017 after thousands of emails and text messages became public, including one in which he promised "we'll stop him" if Trump won.

Trump said Strozk "should have been fired a long time ago".

Comey, however, said he acted appropriately in his handling of the Clinton email investigation.

FBI Director Christopher Wray said on Thursday that the FBI will "hold employees accountable for any potential misconduct" in response to a newly released Justice Department watchdog report.

The report released Thursday calls former FBI Director James Comey "insubordinate" and says his actions were "extraordinary". Strzok, who was romantically involved with Page, was a lead investigator on the Clinton case and later worked the Russian Federation probe before being removed. "Doesn't get any lower than that!" he tweeted.

Trump added: "It was a pretty good report and then I say that the IG blew it at the very end with that statement". "I did a great service to the people in firing him", Trump tweeted.

The FBI obtained a warrant nine days before the presidential election to review those emails, found on the laptop of former Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., - the husband of top Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin - and ultimately determined there was nothing that changed its original conclusion.

But Trump has ramped up his language on the report and has trained his sights on Comey in particular.

Specifically, Horowitz cited Comey's decision to send a letter to Congress on October 28, 2016, announcing that he was reopening the investigation into Clinton's use of a private email server without first consulting officials at the Department of Justice.
