Kim asks Trump to visit Pyongyang in July

President Trump should avoid letting himself be photographed too much with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un as the two meet during a historic summit in Singapore this week, former US ambassador to the United Nations Bill Richardson said on "Fox News Sunday".

But many say this is highly unlikely, given how hard it has been for Mr Kim to build his programme and that the weapons are seen as the major guarantee to holding on to his unchecked power.

Earlier, Trump tweeted it was "great to be in Singapore, excitement is in the air".

Kim met the Singaporean prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, briefly on Sunday, smiling broadly as the two posed for photographs.

Trump, asked by reporters as he arrived in Singapore how feels about the summit, said "very good" before climbing into his limousine and heading to the hotel.

It is an extraordinary turnaround from the rhetoric of past year, when Trump threatened the North with "fire and fury" and Kim dubbed him a "mentally deranged United States dotard".

As Kim's black Mercedes arrived at the St Regis hotel in downtown Singapore, it was flanked by bodyguards in identical black suits jogging alongside the vehicle.

Former US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage expected little progress on the key issue of defining denuclearization.

"The success will be in the shutter clicks of the cameras", he said.

In October, Trump praised the US relationship with Singapore and called Loong a "wonderful and loyal partner".

Pompeo said at a White House press briefing on June 7 that Trump won't budge on anything less than the complete denuclearization of North Korea.

The KCNA news agency heralded the summit as part of a "changed era".

But even the merit of the event itself - long sought by the North, and which Trump apparently impulsively agreed to in March, reportedly without consulting his advisers - has been called into question.

Police repeated a warning that journalists who break Singapore's laws will "not be accredited, and thus will not be able to cover, the summit between the United States of America and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea)".

The two countries have been at loggerheads for decades.

Even so, the summit continues to be a highly sensitive topic in North Korea and it is hard - even more so than usual - to get people to express their opinions about it. While hostilities ended with an armistice in 1953, no peace treaty has been signed yet.

Experts believe the North is on the brink of being able to target the entire USA mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the US and the North.

When Trump and Kim meet on Tuesday at Sentosa, a resort island off Singapore's port with a Universal Studios theme park and man-made beaches, they will be making history.
