Maria Sharapova fires back at Serena in book feud

Maria Sharapova fires back at Serena in book feud

Muguruza's last stand came at 4-all in the second set, a 13-minute game in which she held three break points. I just went and searched for her in the training room.

"I have actually been told quite often that I'll never win or do well because I'm too nice of a person and I just don't have it".

She also was coming off a lopsided victory in the quarterfinals a day earlier, overwhelming Sharapova 6-2, 6-1. So I think that's why I won today.

Sharapova, who missed the 2016 tournament because of a doping ban and a year ago after she was refused a wild card, was broken 6 times, committed 27 unforced errors and won just 5 points on her own serve in the second set. But she failed to convert any of those, and Halep held there, before breaking at love to end it. I will play my game against her, as I did a year ago.

But she is competing at a very high level again in Paris on what looks like her best surface. Thanks to her sublime athleticism and great ball-striking, she can essentially "shut the court down" against her opponents, slowly smothering them with controlled aggression, injections of pace or go on lock-down defensively. She has now made the semis at three of the four majors with Wimbledon being the only Slam where she hasn't featured in the final-four yet. When the opportunity arises, whether it is her section of the draw or in a match, the 25-year-old has been swinging away without being all that fazed by it.For Madison Keys "opportunity" and the "big moment" can be a trickier customer.

"To have had the victories that I have had, to have the results that I have, obviously moving a step in the right direction", said Sharapova who had made the last-eight in Madrid and semis in Rome in the run-up to Paris.

Just like she wowed the tennis world with her summer previous year, Stephens is enjoying a strong spring that started with her winning the title in Miami. She will face either world number one Simona Halep or Angelique Kerber in the semi-finals.

It was just her fifth loss in 25 Grand Slam quarter-finals.

She has acknowledged having trouble handling her nerves, which is part of why she was so proud about the way she overcame Kerber, a two-time major champion and former No 1.

Following this tournament, Stephens will become the 44th woman in WTA history to cross the $10 million career prize money threshold.
